Open-fire dining — Maritime Quarter, Swansea

Fire, tamed.

Bwyd o'r fflam — food from the flame

We light the fire at six. It decides the menu by seven.

Y Fflam is a one-room restaurant on Swansea's SA1 waterfront, built around a single hearth of Welsh oak. There is no gas in the kitchen — only embers, iron and time.

What the fire wants to cook is what we serve: salt marsh lamb off the Gower, cockles raked at Penclawdd, fish straight from the day boats. The menu is written in pencil for a reason.

The first flames taking hold of seasoned Welsh oak in the hearth at Y Fflam.
The hearth, lit at six

Oak first. Everything else follows.

Welsh oak, seasoned two winters, burnt down to embers before the first guest sits. The grill rises and falls on a hand-cranked wheel; the cooking happens in inches, not minutes.

There are no timers at Y Fflam. The fire sets the pace and we keep up. It is a slower way to cook — and the only one we trust.

A short list, mostly low-intervention, chosen to stand near smoke: skin-contact whites for the cockles, structured reds for the lamb, farmhouse cider from the Vale poured by the bottle. The house serve is vermouth on ice, cut with sea buckthorn.

Cooking pared back to its first language — wood, salt, patience. The most quietly thrilling room in Wales.

The Cambrian Review

Y Fflam doesn't perform fire. It listens to it.

Common questions.

Can I book a table online?

Yes — you can book online through our website or call us directly on 01792 480 256. We recommend booking for Friday and Saturday evenings at least 3–5 days in advance. Walk-ins are welcome subject to availability, and we keep a handful of counter seats free each service.

Do you cater for dietary requirements and allergies?

Yes — our menu clearly marks vegetarian, vegan, gluten-aware and nut-free dishes. Please inform us of any allergies when booking and speak to your server on arrival. Our kitchen can accommodate most requirements with advance notice; contact us before you visit if you have complex needs.

Do you offer a set tasting menu?

Yes — we offer a seasonal five-course tasting menu (£68 per person) that changes every 6–8 weeks based on what's locally available. The current menu is listed on our website. A vegetarian version is available on request when booking.

Can you accommodate large groups or private hire?

We can seat groups up to 20 in our main dining room. For larger parties or exclusive hire of the whole restaurant, please contact us directly to discuss options, availability and set menu pricing. We ask for a deposit to secure private bookings.

Is there a dress code?

Smart casual is our suggested dress code — we want you to feel comfortable while maintaining a relaxed but considered atmosphere. We ask that sportswear and flip-flops are avoided in the evening. The room gets warm near the hearth, so layers are advised in winter.

Do you offer gift vouchers?

Yes — we offer gift vouchers for any amount, valid for 12 months from the date of purchase. They can be used against food, drinks or experiences. Purchase in-restaurant, over the phone, or contact us to arrange postage for a printed voucher.

Do you have parking nearby?

There is street parking on Kings Road and a public car park within a 5-minute walk on Oystermouth Road. We recommend checking local parking apps before you arrive. Y Fflam is also accessible by bus — ask us about the nearest stop when you book.
